Samsung Electronics has rewritten the history of the nation's mobile phone industry with its much-touted Galaxy S8
and S8 Plus
flagship smartphones topping the daily sales record with 260,000 here.
The premium handsets got off to a robust sales start on Tuesday when the record number of preorder customers grabbed the new handsets through the retail stores of local mobile carriers.
The company said the devices also has set a preorder record of about 1 million for 11 days from Apr. 7 to 17 in Korea, beating a previous high of 400,000 of the Galaxy Note 7 handset last year by a huge margin.
The latest version of the world's leading Android handset lineup will go on sale Friday in Korea, Canada and the United States. The company will then expand its sales channels into other major Asian economic powerhouses ― such as Hong Kong and Singapore ― as of Apr. 28.
“The record sales figure is unprecedented in the nation's mobile phone history, proving that the new Samsung handsets came with enough of a wow factor even at a time when the smartphone industry is reaching saturation,” an SK Telecom spokesman said.
Samsung's mobile unit faced its worst-ever crisis last year, with the sales of the flagship Note 7 permanently suspended due to continuing reports of defective batteries. But the latest devices, which came about only half a year after the debacle, shows the firm remains highly resilient enough to win back customers' trust as a premium smartphone vendor, according to the official.
“In particular, the device's huge, bezel-less display and much-hyped AI voice assistant Bixby are cited as the key reasons for the smooth and outstanding start,” he said.
Aside from such surprising factors, the company has highlighted the device's improved stability and safer design.
“The S8 and S8 Plus are equipped with multi-layer safety systems and we have conducted eight battery stability tests,” Samsung Electronics' mobile chief Koh Dong-jin recently said.
“We are confident the new handsets are the best ever in our Galaxy series, in terms of safety and quality.”
Regarding the firm's weak design identity, the mobile head at the nation's leading electronics firm said the curved display, which started with the Galaxy S6 series, will become its design standard.
“The curved display sides will be the identity of our flagship smartphone series,” he said, adding that this is because the yield rate for the dual-edge display design has recently reached a point satisfactory enough for its mass-production.
